Bankkrise vermehrt in den Medien berichtet. Das islamische Bankenwesen wird schlechthin als die risikoärmere Alternative zu dem konventionellen, westlich orientierten Bankenwesen propagiert. Es scheint nämlich, als sei bereits aufgrund der prinzipiellen Ausrichtung der islamischen Finanzgeschäfte der Begriff der Unsicherheit bzw. des Risikos aus dem Islamic Banking weitestgehend ausgeklammert. Doch was bedeutet Islamic Banking (IB) Unter dieser Art des Bankings versteht man i.A. Bankdienstleistungen und -produkte, die im Einklang mit den Regeln des Islam, der Scharia, stehen. Welche Bestimmungen das genau sind und wie die Umsetzung in die bankbetriebliche Praxis erfolgt, soll in den nächsten Abschnitten dieser Arbeit geklärt werden. Nennens-wert an dieser Stelle ist, dass die islamische Bankenbranche eine beeindruckende Wachs-tumsgeschichte hinter sich hat. Der Markt wächst seit Jahren mit zweistelligen Wachstumsraten. So verwalteten islamische Finanzdienstleister im Jahr 2008 weltweit ein Vermögen von über 950 Mrd. US-Dollar, 25 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr. Obwohl der Marktanteil islamischer Finanzinstitute global betrachtet noch gering ist, sehen Experten ein enormes Potenzial. So geht Standard Poor's etwa davon aus, dass das Potenzial einen geschätzten Wert von rund 4 Bio. US-Dollar hat. Es scheint also, als wäre das islamische Bankensystem tatsächlich eine vielversprechende Alternative.
